Frequently asked questions
Interested in a
demo flight?
If you are interested in taking a Lancair demo
flight, please fill out the
waiver form and fax it back to Lancair. Please
contact the Lancair sales team for pricing
information.
Is it easy to build a Lancair aircraft?
Yes it is. In fact building a Lancair Kit is much easier than ever before. If someone is good with their hands, then they are going to be a good candidate to build. We complete a majority of the kit’s structural components at the factory, and we are now offering an extensive Builder Assist Program for each airplane. The customer will visit our facility and start building his or her own Lancair, one on one with a Lancair technician. The Builder Assist Program varies for each model.
How long does it take to build a Lancair airframe?
It takes about: 700-1000 hours to build the Legacy, 500 hours to build the Legacy FG, 1300-1500 hours to build the Lancair ES, 1300-1500 hours to build the Lancair IV and 1500-1700 hours to build the Lancair IV-P/Propjet/Sentry. These hours do not include firewall forward installation, electrical, paint or upholstery.
How do I get started on a Lancair kit?
A
50% deposit will secure the kit price and a delivery position.
Deposits vary per kit. Once the deposit is taken,
customers have 9 months to take delivery of their
kit at the original price, if delivery is not taken,
the customer has another 9 months to take delivery
and the current price at the time of delivery will apply. 3-weeks prior to the customer arriving for the Builder Assist Program, payment for the kit and accessories is due.
Does the price include the engine?
No. The kit includes all the major components of the airframe, but no engine, propeller, avionics, paint or interior. Everything you need to complete your airplane can be purchased through Lancair, Kit Components Inc. or Lancair Avionics Inc. except for paint and upholstery. Visit www.kitcomponents.com or www.lancairavionics.com for more information on Lancair accessories.
Can we come visit the factory?
Yes. We encourage people to come and visit Lancair. Tours are available Monday - Friday at 10:00 and 2:00 or by appointment. Demonstration flights are available for a fee. Lancair is located on the Redmond, OR airport. United Express,
Delta, and Horizon airlines fly into Redmond daily.
What room do I need to build a Lancair?
A two-car garage is ok for the Lancair Legacy. However, a large three car garage or bigger would be needed for the Lancair ES and Lancair IV / IV-P / Propjet. The wings are removable on our aircraft for transportation. This allows for assembly off the airport and then transported to the airport for flight. Removing the wings is not something that one would want to do often.
What kind of safety record do we have?
Lancair has an excellent safety record. Between the Builder Assist Program and the new High Performance Flight Training program, our motto runs true "In to the air faster, back to earth safer."
What is this airplane going to really cost me after I am all done?
The prices to completion can vary but the following are very good estimates: Lancair Legacy Fixed Gear - $125,000 - $150,000, Lancair Legacy - $175,000 - $225,000, Lancair Super ES - $225,000 - $275,000, Lancair IV - $275,000 -
$325,000, Lancair IV-P - $350,000 - $400,000, and the Propjet/Sentry $400,000- $450,000.
Do you offer any flight training or aircraft checkouts?
Yes we do. High Performance Training Inc., owner, Pete Zaccagnino has been contracted by Lancair to provide flight training and recurrency training in either the customers airplane or our factory demonstrators. Pete will have flight training seminars at major
air shows, as well as individual instruction around the world. One can also come to our factory and receive flight training. We require the pilot to be current and have a high-performance/complex sign-off.
Do you have a test flight program or option?
Yes. When your kit is ready for flight we have several Lancair representatives that can come to your location. The pilot, who has been trained and certified by High Performance Training Inc., will do a final inspection and then a first flight.
After phase 1 sign-off he will then be allowed take you up in your new airplane.
Is insurance available?
Yes. We are working with insurance companies to insure that our airplanes are safe and our pilots are trained properly. If customers complete their flight training through High Performance
Aircraft Training Inc. Customers must complete
ground school to obtain insurance at a much more affordable rate.
Do you have instrument packages available?
Yes. Lancair Avionics Inc., our in-house avionics shop, can build custom pre-wired instrument panels to your desires. See
www.lancairavionics.com for more information.
Can I get builder assistance?
Yes. Lancair offers a builder assist program for all our aircraft. This program varies for each model. The customer spends 1, 2 or up to
10 weeks with us and will start building their own Lancair. We offer technical assistance and guidance during this build time. We expect to see customers finish their Lancair Legacy Fixed Gear in as little as
10 weeks. The Lancair ES/ES-P/IV/IV-P/Propjet
in 26 weeks or less. The cost for the builder assist program is $4,000.00 per week.
